Carrying over my action research


  1. Evidence is definitely required for this comparison of different sections of the same class doing the same Harkness discussion.
  2. Who: my students with whom I was not doing my action research. What: monitoring discussion equity with the same app I used for my other class. When: the same day I monitored discussion for my experimental class
  3. These students were naturally much more equitable than my experimental class. They had an equity rating of roughly 80%, while my experimental class had one of 67%!
  4. I think this happened because they are naturally a more equitible class, and since I wanted to promote equity in my other, experimental class, these were the results I expected from this section (periods 5 and 7, my experimental class was period 8)
  5. since we are done with Harkness discussions for the quarter, I shared this information with all classes by first asking how they think they did. They were all pleasantly surprised with their equity levels, and period 8 was not at all. We will work next quarter on continuing to hear student voice.

Highs and Lows

Every Monday we do highs and lows from the weekend. Students are never ready and always forget that I do it so they argue over who has to go first. I never go first, and it's almost a test to see if they remember that I, too, have a weekend and get to share my high and low! I had my first observation on a Monday and my observer noted that it seemed like a great way to build community. It is! I really do like it. However, I had a student say his high was crying and his low was crying. Clearly this was for attention but it got me thinking about what this child needs. It was a jumping off point for me to go chat with the counselor and see how we can better serve this child.

Three Strategies for Cooperative Learning in the Cloud--In Practice

I watched videos about collaborative learning in the cloud, which essentially walked me through how to use Google with students. This is something I'm already pretty familiar with and good at in my classroom, so I decided to use the poster method the presenter described. Students used an infographic generator to create information about slave resistance in the colonies. They got together with a partner and creatively constructed a virtual poster on topic or person we had covered in class today. They really liked this because they got to be creative and dig in to a topic they were interested in. Here it is! This one isn't as colorful as some, but the information is pretty good and in a different format than this student was used to.

Community builders a la Christine

I went to Christine Dold's presentation on community builders in her classroom, and the practice seemed so infectious I wanted to try it in my own. All of my students feel like they know each other pretty well, but I wanted to try to ease them into a fun activity. We did a rock paper scissors train at the beginning of class. It was really fun, quick, engaging, and most of all, got them out of their seats. This students are really unique, as they asked "why" we were doing this a lot. These high achievers always need a reason! I didn't have a great answer for them! However, I used their original partners from RPS to do an activity in the future. I think I'll do something like this once a week--it's fun to see them have fun that isn't so serious, like academics. I also like to take them by surprise and do something for seemingly no reason at all!
